How To Buy Best Portable Fish Finder

Type of Portable Fish Finder

There are fish finders for everyone’s suitable needs. They just need to be found. There are three main types of fish finders:

Castable

They are smart and can be connected to your mobile phones, to which the floating transducers transmit all the data via wi-fi.

Portable Units

These consist of compact units compatible with portable kits with portable transducers, carry cases, and rechargeable 12v batteries.

Mountable

These are great for people who rent out boats or want to save time mounting the fish finders because no matter what kind of boats you use, they can be very easily mounted and set temporarily.

There are a lot of vital factors to be taken into consideration while buying a fish finder. The major factors and the reason why each of them is important are given below.

Weight

Weight is an important factor to be considered while buying a portable fish finder. As you will probably travel with it, mount it, and carry it around a lot, your fish finder mustn’t be too heavy. Most of them weigh around 0.5 kilograms. But weight is not an important factor for larger boats because they have their unique mounting area.

You can also connect the portable fish finder to a fishing kayak as the popularity of kayak fish finders is growing.

Cone Angle

Sound waves produced by transducers in the fish finders are in the shape of a cone. Therefore, the device’s performance depends on this. The wider the cone angle and the size of the beam can be, the better the fish finder can perform. A 20-degree angle is ideal for fishing in normal conditions. Some fish finders have special transducers which can increase the cone angle as per the user’s specification.

Screen Resolution

This isn’t that important compared to the other factors, but it is always better to have high resolution and great pixel quality in the fish finder screen and the underwater cameras. But just like any other factor, these can depend on the type of model, and a screen that has 240/160 pixels should meet your expectations. If you require high-definition, you can always opt for units specific for screen resolution. But the downside of having a high-definition screen is that it might make the device less portable. If you don’t know how to read Fish Finder screen then this video may help.

Portability

This is a very important factor to consider because you will have to move around with it, mount it, and carry it everywhere you go. There are quite a few levels of portability when it comes to fish finders, so choose a unit best suited for you based on your needs and likes.

Waterproof

There is always the risk of getting your electronic devices damaged when you go fishing. So ensuring that your devices don’t get damaged is vital. It is always better to be safe than sorry because there are expensive devices. So choose the units which are waterproof and won’t be damaged easily.

Frequency

As the waves produced by the transducer give you all the information about everything underwater, the frequency of the waves is a major factor. The higher the frequency, the better and more accurate the data is. Higher frequency fish finders are usually used in shallow waters, and lower frequency fish finders work better in deep waters. A frequency of 192-200 kHz is ideal for shallow waters, and 50 kHz is ideal for deep waters. So choose the units which are best suited for your fishing style.

Power

For a fish finder to perform better and faster, choosing a high-power model and more watts is recommended. The power is only needed in deep waters because the fish finder has a deeper range and maintains accurate and detailed readings with a high wattage. But the higher the wattage, the less likely it is to last long. Always know how much power is needed and how long each unit can last in one charge before you buy it. If you want a fish finder with high wattage and want to travel for a long time, having a reusable battery is highly recommended.

About Me

Patrick Burrell

Hey there, Patrick here. The Guy behind this blog.

My first fishing experience started when I was 11 years old, fishing for breams in my local lake at home.

In the years following, the hobby turned almost into a full-time pursuit, often requiring the travel of the country to discover new fishing grounds. I enjoy catching pike and king salmon the most.

I have started this blog to share my experience and knowledge about fishing and fishing equipment.

I hope you enjoy my blogs. Wish you good reading..

My wife just gave me the Garmin Striker 4, which provides everything I need for kayak fishing. It’s a great unit.

  2. Hey Patrick, Is it worth buying the Deeper Pro Plus instead of the Deeper Pro? What’s the difference between deeper pro and deeper Pro Plus? Please help…

    1. Deeper Pro and Pro Plus differ only in mapping function (except for the price) .
The Deeper Pro Plus comes with an internal GPS receiver which helps you to create bathymetric contour maps. I would recommend buying Deeper Pro Plus.
